What Is Golf?

Golf, also known as Gôn in Vietnamese, is a sport that is often regarded as a sport for the upper class.

It is a sport in which players use different types of golf clubs to hit a ball into a hole. The fewer strokes a player takes to complete a hole, the better the score.

A standard golf course consists of 18 holes, and each hole includes several key areas:

  • Tee Box: The starting area where golfers hit their first shot on each hole.
  • Fairway: The area with short, well-maintained grass that provides ideal conditions for making shots.
  • Green: The area surrounding the hole, where golfers putt the ball into the hole to complete each hole.

Each golf hole is designed with different types of terrain and hazards to increase the level of difficulty and challenge:

  • Bunker: A sand trap designed to challenge the golfer.
  • Water Hazard: Water obstacles such as ponds, lakes, or streams, usually marked with red or yellow stakes or lines.
  • Hazard: Areas such as bushes, shrubs, or other natural obstacles that can make shots more difficult.
  • Rough: Areas with longer grass located around the fairway, making it more challenging to hit the ball accurately.

The Origin and History of Golf

Golf is widely known as a sport that was historically associated with the aristocracy and is believed to have originated in Scotland in the 15th century.Golf was introduced to Vietnam in the 1920s, and the first golf course in the country was built in Da Lat. However, it was not until the late 20th and early 21st centuries that golf began to become more widely popular in Vietnam.

Today, golf is no longer considered an unfamiliar sport among Vietnamese people. However, it has yet to become a truly mainstream sport.Golf is still often regarded as a sport for the upper class, not only because of its relatively high costs but also because playing and practicing golf requires a significant amount of time from golfers.
